Chiropractic is the third-largest profession of licensed health care practitioners in the United States. It has been in existence since 1895. The profession is described by the Association of Chiropractic Colleges (ACC) as: "…a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery."

"Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts that is concerned with human health and disease processes. Doctors of Chiropractic are physicians who consider man as an integrated being and give special attention to the physiological and biochemical aspects including structural, spinal, musculoskeletal, neurological, vascular, nutritional, emotional and environmental relationships...Chiropractic is a drug-free, non-surgical science and, as such, does not include pharmaceuticals or incisive surgery."
